Fresh 48 vs. Newborn Session: What's the Difference?
Fresh 48 vs. Newborn Session: What's the Difference?
If you're expecting and starting to look into photography, you've probably seen both terms floating around: Fresh 48 and newborn session. They sound similar, but they capture two completely different chapters of your baby's story, and a lot of the mommas I talk to aren't sure which one they actually need. So let's break it down.
What Is a Fresh 48 Session?
A Fresh 48 happens in the hospital, usually within the first 24 to 48 hours after birth. I photograph these at Patewood and other hospitals throughout the Greenville area, and honestly, they hold a completely different kind of energy than any other session I shoot.
There's no setting up, no posing, no "okay, everyone look here." It's just your family, your hospital room, and the most significant hours of your entire life. My job is simply to be quiet, stay out of the way, and capture what's already happening. Think tiny fingers being counted, big sibling meeting baby for the first time, the exhausted, overjoyed look on your face that you'll never be able to recreate again.
These sessions move fast (both literally and in terms of scheduling), since I'm coordinating around your delivery timeline, hospital visiting hours, and your family's energy level. That's why I always recommend reaching out during your second trimester so we can talk logistics ahead of time.
What Is a Newborn Session?
A newborn session happens later, typically within the first two weeks after you're home, and it takes place in the comfort of your own house. This is the relaxed, lifestyle-style session I'm known for: no studio, no forced poses, just your real life and your natural light.
We'll snuggle baby in your nursery, capture those sleepy little details, get genuine candids of you and your partner adjusting to this new normal, and work in any siblings or pets who want to be part of the story too. These sessions run 1 to 2 hours, and I always let baby set the pace so we can pause for feedings, diaper changes, and snuggle breaks along the way.
So Which One Do You Need?
Here's the honest answer: they're not competing with each other, they're telling two different parts of the same story.
Fresh 48 captures the raw, unrepeatable first hours. If you don't book this one, there's no "redo" later. Once those hours pass, they're gone.
Newborn session captures the quieter, cozier chapter once you're settled at home. This is the one most families think of first, and it's just as meaningful, just on a different timeline.
A lot of my Upstate SC families choose to book both, and I offer a discounted rate when you combine them, since I already know your story and your baby by the time we get to the at-home session. But if you can only choose one, think about which moment you'd regret missing more: the very first hours, or the quiet days that follow.
Ready to Book?
