Eli Turns One | A First Birthday Milestone Session in Greenville, SC
The cake was barely touched.
Completely, perfectly, stubbornly untouched. Eli sat next to it, looked at it, crawled away from it, came back, and sat next to it again. He had approximately zero interest in smashing it, eating it, or acknowledging that it existed for any purpose other than to occasionally glance at suspiciously.
And honestly? It was one of the sweetest first birthday sessions I have ever photographed.
Because here is the thing about one-year-olds: they are not performing for anyone. Eli showed up in his denim overalls, sat himself down in that little wooden rocking chair like he owned the place, and gave us the whole range — serious, curious, a little bit of side-eye, and one sister who had plenty to say about all of it.
Happy first birthday, Eli. You did not need the cake.

Twelve months ago your baby was brand new. Now they are pulling up on furniture and eating puffs off a high chair tray and doing that unsteady walk that makes your heart jump into your throat every single time. Before we even got to the cake, Eli sat in the tiniest wooden rocking chair I have ever seen and absolutely nailed it.
Denim overalls. Bare feet. The kind of serious baby expression that reads like he is about to say something very important. That rocking chair and those overalls and that little face made for some of my favorite portraits from this entire year.
We also worked in some floor shots with the gold number one balloon — Eli crawling toward it, sitting next to it, doing his own thing entirely while the balloon waited patiently. The clean white studio backdrop kept everything simple and timeless. No distractions. Just him.
This is one of the reasons I love studio milestone sessions — the simplicity puts all the focus on the baby. There is no busy background competing for your attention. Just Eli, being one, being completely himself.
The Cake Smash That Was Not Quite a Cake Smash
Let me paint you a picture.
A small white cake, perfectly frosted, sitting on a gold stand. A gold number one balloon. A baby in a diaper, placed gently in front of said cake, ready to demolish it.
Eli looked at the cake. The cake looked back at Eli. Neither of them blinked.
He sat beside it. He crawled away. He came back and looked at it some more. At one point I think he considered it seriously and then just decided against the whole concept.
The result is a set of images that are somehow more charming than any full-destruction smash I have ever photographed. There is something about a baby who is completely unmoved by a cake that is just deeply funny and deeply him. His personality is all over those frames — calm, thoughtful, a little skeptical, entirely on his own schedule.
That is a first birthday session that actually looks like your kid.
