The light in the nursery was extraordinary that morning. Soft and golden and coming through the curtains in exactly the right way. Mary Herndon was tucked into her mama's arms, perfectly content, completely unaware of how loved and longed for she already was.

We started with just her — those tiny details I never want to rush past. Her fingers. Her eyelashes. The way she scrunched her whole face when she stretched. The monogrammed blanket folded over the side of her crib. The little books already lined up on the shelf, waiting for her.

I photograph those details on purpose. Because in ten years, you will not remember how small her hands were. But I'll have the proof.

Then we brought the whole family together in the nursery. And that's where the real magic happened.

The way mama held Mary Herndon like she'd been doing it her whole life. The way daddy looked at his daughter with this expression I can only describe as "completely undone by love." The quiet of that morning. The fullness of that room.
