Lifestyle vs. Posed Newborn Photography: Which One Is Right for Your Family?
If you've been scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest trying to figure out what kind of newborn photos you want, you might have noticed something: not all newborn photos look the same.
Some images show a baby curled up like a little frog in a tiny basket, perfectly swaddled with beautiful props all around. Others show a mama in bed with her baby on her chest, morning light pouring through the curtains, looking like the most real and tender moment in the world.
Both are beautiful. Both have a place. But they tell very different stories — and one of them is what I do.
Posed Newborn Photography
Posed sessions are usually done in a studio. They're highly curated — think tiny wraps, carefully arranged props, baby in poses that require real skill and experience to safely achieve. These sessions typically run 3–4 hours and are very much centered on the baby. The results are undeniably sweet and perfectly composed.
But here's the thing: Mom and Dad often aren't in many of the photos. And the images, while gorgeous, don't really tell the story of your family, your home, or what this season of life actually feels like.
Lifestyle Newborn Photography
Lifestyle photography is a completely different approach. Instead of posing your baby in a studio, I come to your home — your actual, real, lived-in home — and I document your family the way it actually is.
The way you hold your baby when you think nobody's watching. The way your toddler tiptoes over to peek at the new baby. The look on your partner's face in the nursery at 7am. The tiny details of the space you've spent months preparing. Those moments — those are what I'm after.
This is motherhood. And motherhood deserves to be documented exactly as it is — not as a posed version of itself.
Which One Is Right for You?
Here are a few questions that might help you decide:
Do you want to be in the photos? Lifestyle sessions put the whole family in the frame. Posed sessions are mostly about baby.
Do you want images that feel like your life? Or images that feel like a beautiful studio creation?
Is your home a place that feels warm and personal to you? If yes — it will feel that way in photos too.
Are you hoping these images still feel like "you" in 30 years? Lifestyle photography tends to age beautifully because it's rooted in real, everyday love.
How I Work: Guided Lifestyle
My sessions aren't completely unstructured — I gently guide you throughout. I'll suggest how to hold baby, where to sit, when to look at each other. But I always leave room for the real moments to happen, because those are the ones that take your breath away.
You'll get soft, beautiful images of your baby. And you'll also get the ones with your real faces, your real home, and the real weight of those first incredible days of motherhood.
I serve families all across Greenville, Simpsonville, Laurens, Anderson, and the SC Upstate. Every home is different. Every family's story is different. That's exactly what I love about this work.
