The Newborn Photography Timeline: From Positive Test to Delivery Day

Finding out you're expecting comes with a long list of things to research: doctors, nurseries, strollers, and somewhere on that list, a newborn photographer. Most parents don't realize how early that last one needs to happen. If you're picturing "I'll book once the baby's here," this post is your reason to move that up.

Why Newborn Photography Works on a Different Timeline

Unlike a family session you can schedule whenever the calendar allows, newborn sessions are tied to a narrow window. The soft, curled up poses and deep sleep most parents picture happen best in the first 5 to 14 days of life, before baby starts stretching out and becoming more alert. That means your session date isn't really a date at all. It's a due date range, held on the calendar in advance.

Because of that narrow window, photographers can only take on a limited number of due dates per month. Once those spots are full, they're full, regardless of when your baby actually arrives.

A Realistic Booking Timeline

During the second trimester (weeks 13 to 27): This is the ideal window to reach out. You'll likely still be deciding on a maternity session too, and booking both at once means one less thing to think about as your due date gets closer.

Early third trimester (weeks 28 to 32): Still a great time to book, especially if you have a specific month or season in mind. Popular due date months, especially ones that line up with a photographer's slower season, fill first.

Weeks 33 and beyond: You can still find availability, but your options narrow. This is the stage where "I'll just call around when the baby comes" turns into a scramble, and some families end up settling for whoever happens to be free.

After delivery: At this point you're booking whatever is left, if anything. Some photographers keep a small buffer for last minute newborns, but it's never guaranteed.

What to Have Ready When You Reach Out

You don't need every detail nailed down before you contact a photographer. Most bookings start with just:

  • Your due date or due date range

  • Whether you're interested in a maternity session as well

  • Any specific style or setting you're drawn to (in-home, studio, or a mix)

  • Siblings or pets you'd like included

Planning Ahead for 2027

If you're due in 2027, now is genuinely the right time to start looking. Fall and winter 2026 dates are already filling on our calendar, which means 2027 due dates are the next open window. Booking early doesn't just secure your spot. It also gives us time to talk through what you're picturing for the session so there's no rush once baby arrives.
