BABY Caulder Fresh 48 Hospital Newborn SESSION | Greenville NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER

Meet baby Caulder, he was just the most precious little squish!

There is nothing quite like a hospital room in those first 48 hours. The world outside keeps moving, but inside that room, time slows all the way down. That is exactly what greeted me when I walked in to meet baby Caulder at Patewood Hospital in Greenville, still brand new, still smelling like the hospital blanket he came home wrapped in.

Fresh 48 sessions are some of my favorites to photograph. There is no styling, no big production, just a family meeting their newest member for the very first time. Caulder's parents were tired in the best possible way, running on adrenaline and love, and it showed in every frame. We photographed his tiny fingers still curled tight, the hospital bracelet still snug on his wrist, and the quiet way his mom looked at him like the rest of the world had gone completely silent.

Fresh 48 sessions happen fast. Babies this new sleep hard and change by the day, so the window to capture these exact details, the hospital bassinet, the going-home outfit, the first family photo as a family of however many, is a short one. I love getting the call that a baby has arrived and being able to walk into that room within a day or two to document it all before it disappears.

What Is a Fresh 48 Session?

If you have not heard the term before, a Fresh 48 session is a newborn photography session that takes place in the hospital within the first 48 hours after birth. Unlike an in-home lifestyle newborn session, which usually happens once you are settled back home in the first two to three weeks, a Fresh 48 session captures those very first hours: the hospital room, the swaddle, the tiny hat, the siblings meeting the baby for the first time, and the exhausted, overjoyed look on new parents' faces that you genuinely cannot recreate later.

A few things I always tell my Fresh 48 families:

You do not need to do anything to prepare. I come to you, work quietly around your nurses and visitors, and photograph things exactly as they are.

Bring the people you want in the photos. Grandparents, siblings, even a proud big brother or sister meeting the baby for the first time make for some of the most treasured images from the whole session.

Lighting in hospital rooms varies. I know how to work with it, whether that is bright window light or the fluorescent overheads most rooms have.
